Psychology of Cravings- Why we crave and what to do about it?

We all know the feeling:

What Your Cravings Are Really Saying:

  1. Emotional Hunger Disguised as Physical Hunger: Stress, boredom, or loneliness often disguise themselves as a craving. Your brain associates certain foods with comfort or reward, leading you to reach for them when emotions run high.

  2. Habit and Environment: If you always snack while watching TV, your brain links the two. Over time, the craving isn’t for food, it’s for the routine.

  3. Deprivation: If you label foods as “bad” and restrict them, your brain starts fixating on them.

  4. Nutritional Gaps: Sometimes, a craving is your body’s way of asking for what it needs, like healthy fats or hydration.

How to Handle Cravings:

  • Pause and Reflect: When a craving arises, pause and observe without judgment.  Ask, “Am I physically hungry, or am I trying to soothe an emotion?” If you’re eating for comfort, ask: What else would help? A walk, a deep breath, or even texting a friend can break the craving cycle

  • Delay the Response: Tell yourself, If I still want this in 10 minutes, I can have it. Most cravings fade when given time.

  • Make It Less Automatic: If certain environments trigger cravings, change the routine. Swap TV snacking for tea, or place tempting foods out of sight.

  • Plan Ahead: Allow room for treats in your diet, so nothing feels off-limits.
