As a clinical psychologist, I’m often asked: How does an eating disorder actually begin? And while each journey is personal, there’s a common thread: an inner voice that gradually grows louder, more demanding, more punishing.
Eating disorders aren’t choices — they’re symptoms. Symptoms of emotional pain, social pressure, unspoken trauma, or a need for control in a life that feels chaotic. They develop slowly, like a drip that eventually wears through stone.
🚨 Early Warning Signs:
Frequent comments about one’s body or others’.
Subtle but consistent changes in eating habits.
Avoiding meals in social settings.
Obsession with calorie counting or excessive exercise.
Irritability or emotional withdrawal.
🛡️ Prevention: A Collective Responsibility
Prevention doesn’t just happen in a therapist’s office. It happens around the dinner table, in classrooms, in the media we consume, and in the conversations we choose to have. Building a healthy relationship with food starts with education, non-judgmental listening, and pushing back against diet culture.
Talking can save a life. So can noticing with empathy. And if you ever feel someone is struggling in silence, remember — you don’t need to be a psychologist to ask, "Are you really okay?"
